Originally selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round, 29th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
On May 30, 2006, the Flyers announced that they had signed Downie to a three-year entry-level contract.
Downie made his long awaited National Hockey League debut with the Flyers on December 5, 2007 after a series of suspensions and stints with affiliate teams.
Downie was traded by the Flyers to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2008, and then to the Colorado Avalanche in 2012.
Downie is back with the Flyers as of October 31st, 2013.
